This article takes stock of the trends and benefits of the collection and dissemination of environmental information by using new and emerging digital technologies and promotes a vision for moving towards a digital ecosystem for the planet. Leveraging the new and emerging digital technologies for the environment effectively is instrumental for assessing and predicting risks, increasing transparency and accountability and informing markets as well as consumer choice. These actions could crucially support the successful implementation, monitoring and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
