United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification

The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa entered into force on 26 December 1996. Over 179 countries were Parties as of March 2002. The Convention proposes an innovative approach with regards to the participation process and the creation of an enabled environment that enhances the action at the local level. Thus, the non-governmental community is part of the official programme of work of the Conference of Parties.
