At the tenth session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment, Ministers endorsed the development of a strategic approach to international chemicals management (SAICM). The approach encourages multi-stakeholder participation in SAICM, particularly with respect to sectors such as agriculture, environment, justice, health, industry, labor and customs, including civil society. The decision emphasizes the need for African Governments to prioritize sound chemicals management in national, subregional and regional planning. The African Ministers also adopted the "Sirte Declaration on the Environment for Development". which stresses the urgent need to promote the integration of the environmental dimension into poverty reduction strategies.
