This article reports on the workshop "Greening Development through ICT and Civic Engagement" held at the first Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Athens, Greece, 31 October 2006. The IGF was called by the UN Secretary-General to guide the development of Internet, following upon the World Summit on the Information Society (2003–2005). ICT policies need to be integrated into legislative and regulatory frameworks, the workshop suggested. A parallel between the guiding principles of Internet Governance and the principles employed by environmental sustainability policy instruments, including especially the Aarhus Convention, was noted by the event moderator.
