The paper deals with recent developments in the area of environmental policymaking. It features the main players in the policymaking arena: corporations integrating environmental considerations into their planning and operations; private sector organizations providing crucial scientific information and assessment of environmental problems; influent international networks replacing old-style hierarchies; and civil society groups using market forces and lawsuits. All of them are playing increasingly important roles in preparing the groundwork for, writing and enforcing multilateral agreements or other environmental safeguards.
