Genetically modified organisms: UK regulation and advisory bodies

The main UK bodies concerned with regulating and monitoring genetically modified organisms are the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; the Food Standards Agency; and the Health and Safety Executive. Releases for research trials or marketing of genetically modified organisms are subject to Part VI of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and the Genetically Modified Organisms (Deliberate Release) Regulations 1992 (as amended in 1995 and 1997). These regulations apply to experimental field trials and commercial agriculture. For 'contained use' – in laboratories and factories – the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations 2000 (SI 2000/2831) applies.(Original source: http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/en/genome/geneticsandsociety/hg15b007.html)
