Environmental Law Programme

UNEP’s Environmental Law activities are carried out within the framework of strategic Programmes for the Development and Periodic Review of environmental Law (The Montevideo Programmes) approved by the Governing Council every ten years. UNEP's Environmental Law Branch assists Governments in the development of international legal instruments in the field of the environment; promotes and provides legal advisory services for the development or strengthening of regional and global multilateral environmental agreements; and encourages international action to address gaps and weaknesses in existing international environmental law and to respond to new environmental challenges. It also develops and promotes the development of soft law instruments, such as codes of conduct and guidelines and provides training in environmental law matters and promotes education in the same field, including Judges Programmes. With a chronological list of major Environmental Law Instruments, publications, calendar and guidelines on compliance and enforcement.
