CIVICUS is an international alliance established to nurture citizen action throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened. CIVICUS aims to contribute towards a healthy global society in which citizen intervention is a vital aspect of political, economic and cultural life, and citizen bodies are able to interact openly and legitimately with government and business. The CIVICUS Civil Society Watch Programme aims to protect the existing space for civil society and citizen participation in countries around the world where the right to freedom of civic association is threatened. The Legitimacy and Transparency Programme intends to enhance the legitimacy, transparency and accountability of civil society organisations by improving their individual and collective governance.
