The Civic Trust is the United Kingdom umbrella body for over800 civic societies. Civic societies are voluntary organisations promoting high standards of planning, conservation and regeneration for the benefit of their local community. They have a formal role as community watchdogs commenting on planning applications for new buildings and developments and guarding against unsympathetic changes to Conservation Areas and historic buildings. The Environmental Action Fund, funded by DEFRA, is partly managed by the Trust. It administers some 30 projects in England, reflecting Civic Trust's ongoing work on sustainable environments and championing community involvement.
