This document is the first integrated, regional report providing indicators for a series of children’s health and environment issues. The objective of this report is to inform decision-makers and the public as to the status of key factors related to children’s health and the environment in North America. Indicator 7 of the report uses pollutant release and transfer register (PRTR) data collected in Canada and the United States. There are 153 chemicals for which both the Canadian and US governments require industrial facilities to report their releases and transfers to the national PRTR programs over the period 1998-2002. With the aim of tracking progress in reducing or preventing the release of such chemicals from industrial activities, this PRTR data–based indicator presents trends in on-site releases to air, water, land and underground injection, as well as in off-site releases (primarily off-site disposal in landfills).
