A round table on «Environmental Awareness Raising Campaigns», held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, sought to identify the priority environmental problems for development of public awareness programs for Kazakhstan in 2009. The round table drew up a tentative version of the draft programme for 2009. The event was held within the framework of the Regional Environmental Center for Cenral Asia's «Awareness Raising Campaigns» project, supported by the European Commission. During the first phase of the project, which began in the second half of 2008, each country in the region will hold round table discussions to identify the priority environmental issues and to develop the program activities for the next year. The second phase of the project will include the information campaigns on environmental issues previously identified with the involvement of NGOs, government agencies, educational institutions, media and businesses. The project is being conducted in partnership with NGOs in Central Asia, government institutions and information networks.
