Aarhus Convention, a pillar of environmental democracy

The federal authority and the three Regions of Belgium jointly launched the "aarhus.be" portal to serve as the Belgian national node of the Aarhus Clearinghouse. The site provides the public with first-hand information on the Aarhus Convention and the public’s rights within the framework of this Convention (in French, Dutch, German and English). A section devoted to the genetically modified organisms (GMO) amendment to the Convention discusses Belgium’s legislative framework which sets rules for public participation and provides minimum procedural guarantees in decisions concerning the deliberate release of GMOs to the environment. It also offers information on the implementation of the Convention at European and Belgian level and contains direct links for more detailed information to the websites of the various public authorities concerned. Included is the Belgium National Implementation Report, a summary of four separate reports prepared by the Federal State and the three Regions, each having been submitted for public consultation. In Dutch, English, French and German.
