Bioethics and Human Rights – the Universal Declaration

The 33rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference adopted the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights in October 2005. This Declaration aims to respond to the needs of developing countries, indigenous communities and all vulnerable groups or individuals. It deals with ethical issues raised by medicine, the life sciences and associated technologies as applied to human beings, while taking into account their social, legal and environmental dimensions. It defines the universally acceptable norms, principles and procedures in the field of bioethics, in conformity with human rights as laid down by international law.
