The nuclear accident at Fukushima, in March 2011, focussed attention on the issue of crisis communication during radiological or nuclear emergencies. Analysis of the failures in Japan led the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) to develop relevant guidelines building on that experience.
This hearing, organised jointly with the European Commission in the context of the work of the European Nuclear Energy Forum on Transparency, will explore crisis communication practices developed in EU member states with the aim of identifying gaps in the present arrangements and proposing remedial actions.
It will also discuss new tools in crisis communication and the challenges they pose to the monitoring and control of information. Communication in times of crises, such as radiological or nuclear emergencies, is an important element of crisis management to establish public confidence in the authorities as well as in their decisions and actions.
In today’s context of media internationalisation and instantaneity introduced by the massive use of social media, this hearing will provide the opportunity to actors working in the different sectors concerned by crisis emergency preparedness to discuss these important issues.
