Marco Keiner, Director of the UNECE Environment, Housing and Land Management Division, in this just-released information bulletin, presents the activities the UNECE undertakes to address climate change.
A wide range of intersectoral activities, including promoting sustainable energy, defining standards of green building and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, are part of the Commission's approach to mitigate and adapt to climate change. UNECE is developing a comprehensive strategy for its activities under the "Delivery as One" UN initiative on system-wide coherence.
The involvement of the public is necessary to achieve public support for the measures required to meet the objectives of the climate change instruments.
The 63rd session of the Economic Commission for Europe (30 March - 1 April 2009) found that "involving the public and civil society organizations in formulating and implementing response to climate change was not a choice but a necessity."
