The Parliament of Kyrgyzstan has adopted a new Environmental Code aimed at modernizing the Republic's approach to environmental protection. The code was developed with the participation of the country's environmental non-governmental community.
Introducing the code, Mr. O.M Artykbaev , a member of parliament who helped initiate the legislation, said:
“The novelty of Environmental Code lies in its harmonization with international instruments .... For the first time the rule of environmental insurance is introduced to ensure the protection of insurance of life, health and property interests of the population, as well as the norms of environmental audits to ensure environmental safety and identify the ways to reduce the risk of adverse effects on the environment".
The code, which will come into effect on 1 March 2009, aims to help Kyrgyzstan to meet its obligations arising from international conventions and agreements. It should also speed the introduction of new energy-saving, low-waste and cleaner technologies.
KyrgyIzstan joined the Aarhus Convention on 1 May 2001.
