Spain has become the latest Party to ratify the amendment on public participation in decision-making on the deliberate release into the environment and placing on the market of genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Spain's deposit of its acceptance, which was received by United Nations Secretary-General on 21 February 2008, raises the number of ratifications of the amendment to ten.
Three-quarters of the Parties to the Convention must ratify the GMO amendment to bring about its entry into force.
The amendment was adopted at the second meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 23 May 2005.
