India's Right to Information Bill, which was passed in May 2005, marks a step toward ending the government's discretionary power over information, according to Indian press and NGO commentators. Overall the bill is in keeping with the global freedom of information movement that has seen similar laws enacted in no less than 50 countries around the world, encouraged by the United Nation's initiatives on better governance.
