ICEL is an independent non-governmental organization that specializes in research and capacity building, advocacy and community empowerment to accomplish the principle of Good Sustainable Development Governance. As an NGO, ICEL carries out activities in legal and policy reform. It seeks to defend the public interest by pursuing the recognition of rights with respect to the environment and natural resources. It also endeavors to enhance the capability of environmental NGOs and the Government of Indonesia with respect to Good Environmental Governance, i.e. establishing the sustainable management of the environment and natural resources on a democratic basis. The Center offers Environmental Law and Enforcement trainings and workshop, including ones targeted to Supreme Court and high Court judges, and publishes the Indonesian Journal of Environmental Law. ICEL has also collaborated in promotion of the Access Initiative and participates in the Partnership for Principle 10.
