Kyrgyzstan: An international conference of judges on access to environmental justice is taking place in Cholpon-Ata

The Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Association of Judges of Kyrgyzstan with support from UNDP and the USAID project "Ukuk Bulagy" are holding an international conference on access to environmental justice. The participants are government officials, judges, lawyers, international experts and environmentalists who represent judicial systems from Kyrgyzta, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as UNDP, UNECE, USAID and other international organizations. This conference is seen as potentially fostering collaborative efforts among judicial communities in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus in addressing global environmental justice issues.

According to the press service of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic, participants considered a wide range of environmental justice issues, opening up the possibility of dialogue and cooperation between the judicial systems of the region. The main goal of the conference is to strengthen regional cooperation between judicial systems and other stakeholders in the implementation of environmental rights and justice policies.

The conference is expected to featured 15 presentations in five plenary sessions, which addressed the following issues: international trends in promoting environmental justice and the rule of law, environmental procedural rights and the Aarhus Convention, strengthening international cooperation in the interests of environmental justice, international experience of judicial systems in promoting environmental justice, experience implementation of judicial protection of ecology in the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as prospects for regional cooperation in the interests of environmental justice.
