An international climate conference, “Beyond Kyoto: Addressing the Challenges ofClimate Change”, involving more than 1,000 participants, including prominent representatives from science, industry, policy and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), was held at the Aarhus University in March 2009. The conference rapporteurs called on the Parties to UNFCCC to include in the anticipated Copenhagen agreement provisions on access to information, public participation and access to justice in relation to climate change, building on the broad consensus reflected in that Convention’s article 6 of and principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and also drawing on elements of the Aarhus Convention.
