This paper was delivered at the conference, "The Aarhus Convention: How are its access to justice provisions being implemented?", in Brussels on 2 June 2008, by the President of the European Union Forum of Judges for the Environment. Prof. Lavrysen argues that the Convention should be an important item in training activities for judges and other judicial officers. The issue of different approaches to legal standing taken by EU States is also reviewed.
