FERN is pleased to announce the publication of its new report: Accessing environmental information in and from the European Community. A practical guide to your right to know. This new report explains how the Aarhus Convention on access to environmental information, public participation in decision-making and access to justice in environmental matters is going to increase transparency, public participation and access to courts and judicial review. It answers questions a number of NGOs have been asking such as:• Will access finally be available to information previously denied by institutions like the European Investment Bank or export credit agencies?• How can we access relevant documents and participate in decision-making about projects that affect the environment? Not all the answers to these questions are simple and some are still waiting for implementing legislation to be developed. Even where it is in place, the legal framework needs to be interpreted and tested through requests and possible court cases. With this guide, which focuses on access to environmental information, FERN gives the public a starting point for exercising some of the rights enshrined in the Convention.
