Need to Know: India's "Right to Information Act"

The article explains how India's poorest citizens are using the "Right to Information Act" to secure public services and resources and expose corruption. The Act, which came into force in October 2005, applies to all public authorities. A Central Information Commission (CIC) charged with implementing the Act has disposed of 6,500 cases so far (2007). The Commission receives an average of 900 new cases each month and is reportedly struggling with the growing backlog of cases.
