Spain: PAN appeals to the United Nations against Spain

The Portuguese People-Animal-Nature Party (PAN) plans to file two complaints to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe for breach of both the Aarhus and the Espoo Convention. The alleged breaches relate to the construction of the nuclear waste storage near the Almaraz nuclear power plant, located 100 km from Portugal, and its lifetime extension. The party claims that there was no transboundary assessment of the environmental impact as set out in the directives transposing the Conventions. There have already been more than 2,500 problems and the power plant has ceased to function twice in the past year. However, the economic benefits of the operators are still enormous.
