Spain: Greenpeace denounces the possible reopening of the Garona nuclear plant

The plant is owned by Nuclenor (50% owned by Endesa and Iberdrola), is paralyzed from the December 16, 2012 and is on administrative situation of cessation of activity since July 6, 2013.

Greenpeace said Friday that the Government intends to extend the life of Garona without a study of environmental impact assessment taking into account the cross-border context.

The head of the anti-nuclear campaign of Greenpeace, Rachel Stack, said Nuclenor and Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, "seem to forget that Garona should be subjected to transboundary Environmental Impact Assessment before a renewal of license "as well as the possible reopening process is open to" public participation ".

The environmental organization has sent a letter to Soria, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and Nuclenor, for information on when and how to carry out the process, with no answers .

Greenpeace stressed that the request is part of the obligation on 7 June at the meeting of the Parties to the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context, signed in Espoo (Finland) in 1991, of which Spain is a party.

Next Tuesday, September 30, the deadline established by the CSN to present a forecast Nuclenor dates for compliance with any additional requirements established by the regulatory body for the renewal of Garona.

Greenpeace said that these requirements must be added the EIA transboundary and the construction of a cooling tower, as required by the Ebro River Basin.
