Spain: “Government forgets that the state has signed the Aarhus Convention”

Ten conservation and cultural organisations in Spain have complained to various public bodies, demanding a modification of the government’s plan to build a path along the river Mandeo. The citizen movement, along with its demand, submitted a detailed report on more economical alternative paths, which would not be damaged by recurrent floods and provide greater security to its users. The alternative options are furthermore compatible with the conservation of the natural landscape. They argue that the option will therefore also make it more attractive to neighbours and tourists. According to the citizen movement, the government has so far neglected environmental legislation in planning the path and acted as if it had forgotten its obligations under the Aarhus Convention.
