The European Aarhus Convention, which promotes improvements in the right of citizens regarding access to environmental information, public participation and justice from public bodies is a help to those who oppose the building of an extra high voltage power line (MAT). The project is supposed to link the towns Morella and Almassora. In principle, the time period for the public to file a complaint has expired. However, the Convention sets out that information on activities of public bodies in environmental matters, which may affect urban or ecological environments need to be widely communicated in order to ensure that the public knows about it. While, according to the head of the citizen platform “No to MAT”, Ana Palerm, the project is entirely legal and its execution is undoubted, the Convention nevertheless helps the citizens to bring forward their arguments. Palerm recalled that the interest in this route is enormous not only in the urban area, but also in the rural environments, where families live only very few meters away from where the high voltage towers are planned to be placed.
