The fishing sector of Galicia fears that the Royal Decree, which opens the doors to industrial aquaculture and is to be approved by the Spanish government soon, will pose a threat to the traditional fishing sector. Just after the decree had been introduce, a group of fishermen, fishermen’s associations, mussel producers trade unions and other platforms officially presented their concerns to the government and argued that it would violate the Aarhus Convention if the citizens were not offered effective public participation by providing reasonable timeframes which take in account periods of summer and Christmas vacations. The Galician Senator therefore just introduced a motion urging the government to negotiate with the fishing sector before approving the decree. She argued that the government has a duty to protect the traditional fishing sector, which contributes to sustainability and generates wealth for the country.
