The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) recognizes the importance of “Encouraging implementation of existing internationally recognized standards, tools and approaches…such as…pollutant release and transfer registers.” Following SAICM's adoption, the International Conference on Chemicals Management invited UNEP to establish a voluntary, time-limited trust fund to provide seed money to support the objective and strategic priorities of the SAICM Quick Start Programme. Developing countries and countries with economies in transition are eligible for support from the trust fund. Proposals may be presented by SAICM participating Governments that have given appropriate formal recognition to SAICM. On an exceptional basis, representatives of civil society networks participating in SAICM may also present project proposals. The first round of applications for funding from the trust fund is now open and will close on 18 August 2006. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
