Portugal became the latest country to ratify the Kiev Protocol on Pollultant Release and Transfer Registers to the UNECE Aarhus Convention, depositing its instrument of ratification with the UN Secretary-General on 8 October 2009, the day of entry into force of the chemical right-to-know treaty. Portugal is set to become the 23rd Party to the treaty.
The Czech Republic had deposited its instrument of ratification on 12 August 2009. The Depository Notification issued by the UN Secretary-General failed to reach the Aarhus Convention secretariat and the UN Treaty offices' website did not reflect the Czech ratification at the time of entry into force. The mistake was quickly remedied after an alert Czech offiicial contacted the ECE secretariat.
