The resistance against the HVDC line and its earth cabling is reviving in Germany. The citizens’ initiative “Speicherersdorf says no” as well as the action alliance are optimistic to be able to postpone the project until regenerative energy and new storage facilities make it superfluous. During their recent gathering, representatives of the citizens’ initiative and other interested activists signed an opinion on the first draft of the Network Development Plan (NEP) 2030, in which they argue against the expansion by means of HVDC routes. The spokesperson of the initiative highlights that in March, the network operator organises several events regarding the plans to the exclusion of the public. According to the spokesperson of the citizens’ initiative, the NEP is in violation of the provisions in the Aarhus Convention, which grant the public the right to participate in decision-making processes. The activists therefore place great hopes in the complaint filed under the Convention against the German Environmental Appeals Act.
