Education for Sustainable Development featured at 14th session of Commission on Sustainable Development

A joint UNECE - UNESCO side-event on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is being organized during the 14th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (New York, 1-12 May 2006). The event will be in a form of a round-table discussion moderated by the Director of UNESCO New York Office, Ms Hélène Gosselin. The discussion will focus on the ESD implementation perspectives at global, regional and national levels, as well as providing the views from stakeholders.

 

The side event will take place at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium from 13.15-14.45 on 3 May 2006.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

Mr Kaj Bärlund, Director of the Environment, Housing and Land Management Division, UNECE, will present “Regional Responses to Implementation” of the UNECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development at the scheduled side event. The UNECE ESD Strategy was adopted in Vilnius, Lithuania, in March 2005.

 

CSD-14 opened on 1 May and will continue through 12 May 2006, at UN headquarters in New York.  The CSD meets annually, in two-year “Implementation Cycles,” with each cycle focusing on thematic clusters alongside cross-sectoral issues. CSD-14 will review progress in energy for sustainable development, industrial development, air pollution and the atmosphere, and climate change, together with cross-cutting issues. Specifically, CSD-14 has been tasked with evaluating progress in implementing Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation, while focusing on identifying barriers and constraints, lessons learned and best practices in implementation in the thematic cluster. Agenda 21 provided the framework for development of the UNECE Aarhus Convention.
