The Belgium federal authority and the three Regions of Belgium announced today the launch of their national "aarhus.be" portal, the Belgian national node to the Aarhus Clearinghouse. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The site ’www.aarhus.be’ provides the public with first-hand information on the Aarhus Convention and the public’s rights within the framework of this Convention (in French, Dutch, German and English). It also offers information on the implementation of the Convention at European and Belgian level and contains direct links for more detailed information to the websites of the various public authorities concerned.

A special section of the Belgium site covers the amendment to the Convention dealing with the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms.  The amendment, which was adopted by the Second Meeting of the Parties to the Convention in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in May 2005, has yet to come into force.
