European Charter of Active Citizenship: Toolkit Citizen Participation

The main objective of the project is to draft and promote a European Charter of Active Citizenship based on the practical and theoretical knowledge of civic organizations. In order to define the rights of the Charter, the project team and its partners (coming from ten European countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey) have collected 50 Best Practices of Civic Participation in fields such as consumers, health, youth, environment, women’s rights, etc. that demonstrate that these rights are achievable. The project also drew from research on official documents of the European institutions; Civic Organisations’ papers and studies/researches on the themes of civic participation, active citizenship, civil dialogue and participatory democracy, as well as other Charters and Conventions dealing directly or indirectly with this theme of citizens’ participation. The final Conference of the project where the Charter will be presented and discussed will take place in Vienna, Austria, 22-23 May 2006. In English, French and Spanish.
