On occasion of Danube Day 2005, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR, www.icpdr.org) announces the first stakeholder conference for the entire Danube basin. The aim of the conference is to strengthen the input of all relevant stakeholder groups in view of a more active involvement as envisaged by article 14 of the EU Water Framework Directive.

In particular the conference will offer the opportunity to discuss recent developments and the planned steps on the following issues: Danube River Basin Analysis 2004, the ICPDR Action Programme on Sustainable Flood Protection as well as the ICPDR concept for public participation.

In order to achieve a wide representation of stakeholders from all sectors and countries, ICPDR would like to solicit applications from organisations throughout the basin.

In an UNECE report on global and regional development on issues related to principle 10 of the Rio Declaration, the ICPDR was identified as the first international river basin organization to undertake a public participation strategy.

Further information and the application form can be obtained on the conference website at www.ecologic-events.de/danube.
