Parties to UN Aarhus Convention call on Belarus to comply with intl obligations

Date published:

The parties to the Convention have stated this week that Belarus is building the nuclear facility in breach of the Convention since it does not provide public access to information about the project, Lithuania's Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

Participants of the meeting, which took place in Maastricht on Jun. 30-Jul. 2, pointed out that Belarus had failed to implement the recommendations issued in 2011 by the Compliance Committee of the Aarhus Convention as it restricted access to information for its nationals and possibilities for the public to make comments on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report.

The EU Member States issued a joint statement calling on Belarus to ensure compliance with the requirements by the next meeting of the parties to the Convention.

Lithuania has repeatedly slammed Belarus for failure to ensure the security of its nuclear facility, which is being built at a distance of meager 50 kilometers from Vilnius.
