Community outreach practices to be highlighted as Mexico prepares its first national PRTR report

Date published:

Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) now exist in each of the three North American countries.  In 2005, Mexico published its reporting format and list of chemical substances for which Pollutant Release and Transfer Register reporting is required beginning with 2004 data.  The first public release will take place in 2006 through the Registro de Emisiones y Transferencia de Contaminantes (RETC).

The twin goals of the North American Consultative Group meeting, to be held 17-18 October 2005 in Monterrey, Mexico, are to establish partnerships across North America to support the implementation of the RETC in Mexico and raise awareness among the Mexican public and industrial sector about the importance of open dialogue on issues related to pollutant releases and environmental risks and safety.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The meeting will provide a hands-on workshop with participants from industry, environmental non-governmental organizations, academia, State and Province level environmental ministries, the media, and governments.  Break-out groups will be formed to discuss various topics, including:

·          Communicating PRTR Data to Employees, Media and Communities -- Best Practices for Community Outreach

·          Integrating PRTR Data into Corporate Decision Making

·          Sharing Experiences in Reporting Data and the Development of Sector Guidance
